Introduction

Resource-efficient Society aim to maximising the supply of money, materials and other staff and minimum wasted effort or expense that can be in order to function effectively.

Natural resources support the functioning of global economy and our quality of life. These resources include raw materials such as fuels, minerals and metals. The pressures on resources are increasing.
If current trends continue, by 2050, the global population is expected to have grown by 30% to around 9 billion and people in developing and emerging economies will legitimately aspire to the welfare and consumption levels of developed countries. (A resource-efficient Europe 2013)
The intensive use of the world's resources puts our plant on dangerous situation. Continuing our current situation of resources use is not an option.
To dealing with situation, increasing resource efficiency will be key to securing our life. It will bring major economic opportunities, improve productivity, and decrease costs. It is necessary to develop new products and services and find new ways to reduce inputs, minimise waste, improve management of resource, change consumption patterns, optimise production processes.
In general speaking, building up a Resource-efficient society will be huge benefit for all human beings. For people who do value resource-efficient will gain more positive emotion through experience of using new product or services. Because of maximizing of using product value, people will get more efficient daily life without big wastage like previous life pattern.
When Resource-efficient society working into right track, Society will develop sustainable.

Approach (My interest and abilities)
As an international student, I am not having a stable home in Australia. Because we renting place and when we come back hometown, we will terminate the contact with agent. When we come will renting a place to stay.
For this reason, we move a lot. As resource-efficient products, it will really help us to improve the efficient of our life.
Compared with other countries, China has a small amount of per-capita resources. That consumes a large amount of natural resources and produce a large amount of waste, has caused serious environmental pollution problems.
When my holiday I will back to china and have some travel, I can really see how resource shortage of some area. So I become quite value of resource like water, paper, electronic etc.
Approach or method
“Extreme User Interviews” from IDEO methods card really helped. Live in china my parents are very familiar of this situation in china.
“Narration” is a good way to reach user’s motivations, concerns, perception and reasoning.

Also online research is important of primary stage of design.
Library contain some literature review is quite helped me.

concept

Feedback from tutor:

My services system is too weak, Explore more on the services system that it can be enhanced, focus more on the customers' convenience.Think more about design of the product. the insole may not really work in any type of shoes.Think about how this specific activities and understand the emotions or behaviours involved.

Feedback from classmates:

The idea behind it is good. Think of the possibilities how customers can upload and download other people's songs.

the technology of the shoes insole may be a difficult part to exploded. do more research in this.

week2

Feedback from Mar:
Changing closure design to make whole product using same material, easy to recycle.
Make bottle for small concentrate detergent, the normal detergent liquid isn't sustainable, because when it will transport a lot of water.
Feedback from Daming:
The bottle is not comfortable when holding the sink part, but emboss part is comfortable to grab.
reverse the curve of whole bottle.
Feedback from Cai Min:
the size of bottle should be consider, the size of the bottle should be suit both male and female. Design should be unisex.

Aim of this week:
Finish solidworks.
working on all the problem i got.
Try to do same labeling if have time.

Video Reflection

Greenfly: Design greener products
Greenfly is a great website to allows us to predict and test our design concept whether is sustainable, eco friendly, etc. This website become a powerful tool of access of environment consideration and life cycle data. 1) It makes us redesign concept if the result isn’t come out well. 2) As a good designer, we should consider a lot more about protect environment instead of thinking how to make a fancy look.
3) This video told me there are some considerations I have to think, like Transport, Distribution, water use, energy use…

——Autodesk: Whole system and lifecycle thinking
The ways to design the product more sustainable is to think the picture more broadly and try looking the problem form other perspective views.
Every product will impact manufacturing, distributing, use and disposal, and through this process the product may produce gas emissions, water pollution, air pollution.
The first step is to more deeply define the problem by looking at the whole system,
And second, to optimize for environmental performance we need to consider impacts through the entire lifecycle of product or service.
Thirdly we should look for solutions by looking again at the whole system.
And the end carefully makes a choice and repeat and repeat.
This video bring us the better way of thinking and to develop a better design solution, the sustainable design is not save some waste by a piece of material is look the whole cycle to reduce the waste of it.

——Autodesk: Improving product life time
Design sustainably means getting the most use out of the materials and energy that go into your product. The keyword is “extending useful life”.
There many ways to maximize the product lifetime, like make it more durable or easier to repair or upgrades, design it easier to recyclable. Try to decrease the disposal part to have a much longer life.
There are three kind of the product to design, short lifetime product, long lifetime product and the product in between. There have different design principles. Recycle and compost for short lifetime product, durable for long lifetime product and repair and upgrade for the product in between. The best design will incorporate all of them.

——Light weighting
Product made with less material is a great helpful of reduce disposal part. A lot of product can be made lightweight to help the environment. Innovation design is really great part to reduce the weight of the product.
“Every pound of material you save in your product saves much more upstream”
But there are different situation for designer using lightweight strategy, materials for waster bigger part, if there is an energy power source, when you understand your product function and form.

——Green materials selection
A good green material is abundant and non-toxic which doesn’t require a lot of energy and other resources, good end of products…
To make a sustainable design, designers should pay a lot of attention on material choose, the origin of the material and manufacture making. As a designer, we should always using the more efficiently and green materials.

——Energy efficient design
As a designer, we need to understand the sources of energy, and know energy converted.
When we using energy, we have to think about where is the energy come from or how they come. For example, during the process of electrical from coal, it is not efficiency at all. When the electricity came to our home, the energy already waste 84% efficient.
To be sustainable, we need choose an energy source that is much lower impact like solar plant.
On the daily life, we can avoid a lot of unnecessary energy waste.
As a designer, we can use energy more effectively by understanding energy systems to make our design fit in.

Research of Visual Impairment

Weekly consultation reflection
  • Feedback from Mar: Working on the seriously vision impaired people, not moderate vision             impairment. work on concept 3 do more research on target market life situation and experiment.
  • Feedback from kevin:  should be able to determine the amount of liquid within the retainer. Good understanding on overall form and the type of product it is.
  • Feedback from Min: Try to redesign the lip to make it easier to open, thinking about the what happen when the liquid is nearly run out, try to prevent the unnecessary waste.

  • work on this week
    • research more existing package, and what target market use in their daily life.
    • work on the closure and shape reference of standard.
    • think about the possibility of more functional of one packaging.
